Sunday’s Stitches & Stuff – Episode 29 – My 2017 ORTs

Happy Sunday to you! Today is my first Heaven And Earth Designs day; a day dedicated entirely to working on a HAED project. My first project, and therefore the one I will be working on today, is Ex-Machina.

Check out my Instagram for pictures throughout the day.

In the meantime, I realized I never shared what I did with my ORTs from 2017, so that’s what’s happening in this post. First, let’s clear up what exactly an ORT is, there has been much discussion on social media regarding what the letters in ORT represent. Actually, they don’t represent anything; ort is an actual word in and of itself. Ort refers to a remainder of food at the end of a meal, or the scraps leftover. It originates in the German language with orte meaning food remains.

With the evolution of language, ort was taken from the kitchen and into the quilting room when women began to refer to their let over bits of fabric as orts. As modern day stitchers, we all enjoy our acronyms such as SAL & BAP. So naturally, we stitchers like to believe that ort is ORT, with most stitchers I’ve spoken to stating it stands for Old Raggedy Threads. (Check out this list of common cross stitch abbreviations.)

Whether it’s ort or ORT, I still love collecting them throughout the year as a colorful reminder of all the projects I worked on. For 2017, I emptied my ORT jar and placed all my orts into an empty Christmas ornament that I have hanging in my craft area. Here are a few pictures of the process:

That’s all, for now, I hope you have a great week and

thanks for taking the time to read my post.
